Web + Travel = Travel2.0

Generated Image Lisa King, a producer at CDG, and I are doing a presentation on Web 2.0 to HSMAI DC, the Hospitality, Sales and Marketing Association, on Wednesday night.  Our goal is to ensure that the people attending can walk out the door and have at least three things they can realistically do the next day to add social media elements to their marketing mix.

The hard part is keeping the presentation focused so we manage to stay within the two-hour time slot, and not completely overwhelm everyone!  Lisa and I are extremely well versed in social media technology and strategy, so we have to be careful not to completely geek out.  Some days it's hard to remember that MySpace is still cutting edge to many, let alone Twitter, SLurls, and Sonopia.

Did I lose you there.

That's the point.

Lisa and I are extremely well versed in both the technology and theories of Web 2.0, and we are both very committed to the principles behind it -- so we could go on ad nauseum.  There's so much we could talk about, but we worked to create a presentation that gives them enough, without overwhelming them. Knowing that for most comments on a blog are still scary, we need to make sure that we present what people can really do, even while showing them what's coming.  We both really want to be sure that all of the attendees leave with at least three things that they can confidently add to their marketing mix the next day.

So along with what they could do, we have to talk about best practices and how to engage on social media sites.  The last thing I'd want is for people to leave the presentation and then start posting comments like "come check out my site...", if that even got past someone's Askimet filter.  It's so easy to get involved in the conversation and make use of all the social media options that are out there today, but you have to be will to get involved in the conversation and not just push message -- which is a hard change for many!

For once the travel industry is actually on the front edge of a technology trend, which is a good thing.  They are better positioned than most industries to take advantage of Web 2.0, because people love to talk about and share travel stories.
